Entstanden ist das Kartenlegen wie  Nachforschungen ergeben haben in China. Mit der Entwicklung des Holztafeldruckes im 7. Jahrhundert nach Christi wurden auch Spielkarten gedruckt und verbreitet. Dadurch erlebte das Wahrsagen mit Karten seine erste Hochblüte.

Anfang des 15. Jahrhundert kam das Kartenlegen und Wahrsagen auch zu uns nach Europa. Es wurde vom  fahrenden Volk auf Jahrmärkten und Festen  angeboten und damit auch verbreitet. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde das Kartenlegen in Frankreich durch die Okulisten populär. Wobei es im späten 20. Jahrhundert eine neue Renaissance erlebte: New Age, Esoterik und Wahrsagerei steigen in der Beliebtheit. Heute wir die Kartomantie sowohl in Zeitschriften als auch in Fernsehsendungen, über das Radio und auch über elektronische Medien angeboten.

 

Wissenschaftlich sind die Ergebnisse des Kartenlegens nicht belegt. Das Ergebnis hängt auch immer von der psychologischen Begabung des Kartenlegers und der Mitteilungsfreudigkeit des Ratsuchenden ab. Der Kartenleger legt  verschiedene Spielkarten wie Tarot Karten, Kipper Karten, Zigeunerkarten oder auch ganz simple Skartkarten auf. Mithilfe eines Legemusters oder Bilder kann der erfahrene und einfühlsame  Kartenleger schon allein aufgrund der Position der Karten etwas deuten. Wünsche, Sorgen und Begebenheiten in der Zukunft können so erkannt werden. Aber auch aus der Beziehung der Lage der Karten zueinander, können Schlüsse gezogen werden und gedeutet werden. Es kann die derzeitige Lebenssituation aber auch ein Blick in die Zukunft gewagt werden, und Prognosen gezogen werden.
